Yes, that works to assist you to become more astute as regards your surroundings, but does not serve to make you more astute at discerning truth from half-truth and outright falsehood. Being more aware of your surroundings does somewhat assist in being more astutely self-aware, but is not the entire answer. I would almost say that the one sentence answer is 'facile', except that I have utilized it too, and I know that I am not at all 'facile, or am I. (self-deprecation has got to be one of the definitions of 'facile'). I think the 'or am I' gave it away.
